How to choose a kitchen area rug

A lot of folks of I know just brush off the idea of installing a rug in the kitchen. "Why not?" I ask them, and the answers almost always revolve around 'they can get messy', 'hard to clean', 'there's not enough space', 'my kitchen has an odd shape'... stuff like that. Now, many are often surprised to discover that there are kitchen area rugs available to fit any circumstance or need.

The kitchen is an important room in your house, as well as the room with the most traffic, so there's no reason as to why you should not decorate it with a nice kitchen area rug. That leads us on two paths -- decoration and durability.

When choosing and buying a kitchen area rug, first look at the color and the pattern. Do they strike off with what you have in your kitchen? Or do they clash? For instance, and orange and white themed kitchen with the warm hues of a hardwood floor will beautifully take in an ochre-colored rug, but not an olive green. In other words, make sure the rug blends in well to enhance your kitchen décor.

Next, kitchen area rugs can be rectangular or circular, oval or square. And many vendors let you customize them to your exact needs. However, kitchen area rugs are not meant to cover wall to wall, so small portion of the floor will stick out beneath the rug. From what I see, the most popular place the rug is under the kitchen table or near a sink and dishwasher.

Considering foamed kitchen area rugs? They have their plus points, such as being easy on your feet and avoiding dents on utensils that fall on the floor. In any case, the rug must be resilient enough to sustain the traffic and be made of durable material, such as polypropylene. Also consider the stain resisting factor in a kitchen area rug. You know what I mean -- that gains importance especially when you're planning to place the rug by kitchen island or the sink.

Besides being functional, kitchen area rugs ideally must also be anti-slip and fire-proof. Get one with thin borders that hug the floor, to prevent anyone from tripping over it. From a convenience point of view, you want to choose a machine washable kitchen area rug.

There are a number of places where you can get a kitchen area rug. The department store, your local dollar store, Amazon.com... the list goes on. Ebay is especially a good online source to buy a kitchen area rug at some great bargains.
